NT (SBS) folder security access

By WHMR ·
I changed the rights on a folder using the explorer, and when I click ok, it tells me that pagefile.sys is in use. How can I get it to accept the change?

pagefile.sys is your swap file. You do NOT want to change any permissions on it. If you are trying to change permissions on the folder containing pagefile.sys, be very cautious -- if you lock the system out of this file bad things will happen and your system may not be able to boot.

DO NOT remove any rights of account SYSTEM anywhere (ever)! This is the fastest way I know to completely trash your NT system.

Having said that, if you need to change the permissions on a root folder which contains a pagefile.sys, you can move the file to another disk following the instructions below. DO NOT just move the file!

To move pagefile.sys to another drive (physical drive, NOT a network drive):
Right-click 'My Computer' and select Properties.
Click the Performance tab.
Find the box for Virtual Memory, and click the Change button in the box.
You will see a list of your drives, and the paging file size on each drive.
Put sufficient paging space on a drive other than the one you wish to change by clicking the drive, changing the numbers, then clicking Set.
Click on the drive you wish to change, then clear the boxes and click Set.
Click OK.
The change may not take effect until you reboot.

Good luck.

RGershbock is absolutly correct. In fact you will see a slight performance increase by moving the swap file to a drive other than the one your system files are on. (If you believe Microsoft anyway)
