NT Server Password Change Notification

By ikab ·
I am running Win NT 4 Server with NT workstation and Win95 clients. I have set the users' passwords to expire after a specific period.
The problem is that about 15 days before the passwords are to expire, they get a message telling them that the password will expire in xx days and asking if they wish to change it. They keep answering "no", until about the day that the password expires.
We used to use Netware before, and we would only get the message about 3 days before the password would expire.
I have tried to check if this option can be changed from the registry, but I cannot find the option.

In Windows NT 4.0, a new registry parameter is available to allow administrators to configure the number of days at which the Password Change Notification is presented. The implementation of this new parameter requires that the registry change be made on the client computer.

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious, system-wide problems that may require you to reinstall Windows NT to correct them. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use this tool at your own risk.

Run Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).

From the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE subtree, go to the following key:
\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Add or modify the following entry:
PasswordExpiryWarning: REG_DWOR <number of days>

Click OK and quit Registry Editor.

This entry specifies the number of days that a warning message is displayed before the user's passwor

Maybe this might help too:

Q. How can I change the password change for computer/trust accounts?

A. The default interval for password changes for a computer/trust account can be modified as follows:

1.Start the registry editor (regedit.exe)
2.Move to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netlogon\Parameters
3.From the Edit menu select New - DWORD value
4.Enter a name of MaximumPasswordAge
5.Double click the new value and set to the number of days 6.Click OK
7.Close the registry editor

In NT 4.0 this value is only available for machines with Service Pack 4 and for all versions of Windows 2000. Values can be in the range
of 1 to 1,000,000.
