NT server with xp clients???

By mellon__head ·
I stuffed up i put this post in the Discussion section, my bad

Okay at the school i'm at they are running an NT server, on monday we are reciving 8 new PC's, however they are all loaded with XP not 98.

My question is will the profiles and policies that have been set up work with the xp clients. The currnet profiles and policies are running on 98 machines.

Any help would be great, and if it can e done what to do. Cheers.

Profiles will work, but as the environments are so much different only the lowest common denominator of an XP/98 profile will 'roam' to both types machines.
Policies are always separate in ms terms. The 98 machines 'obey' to a CONFIG.POL file which is stored on NT Server, the XP machines do expect Group Policy. However in situations without Active Directory it is possible to maintain the XP policy similarly to Group Policy and also store it as a file on the file server. Still the format will be totally different from the 98's CONFIG.POL file, so maintainance will be separate.

There are a few more issues with linking XP desktops into a NT domain (like enabling WINS in the XP's network client settings), but basically it can be done. As long as it's XP Pro edition of course, not Home edition.
