NT servers not seeing each other

By sysadmin ·
I am stumped on this one and know I'm missing something easy.

I have an existing peer-to-peer network that I am adding a new NT4 server to. Currently I have 3 NT4 servers running TCP/IP and NETBUI. They can see each other all the time perfectly.

I made a new install of NT4 on the new server with the same two protocols. It is in the same workgoup and subnet. All network properties are the same except one. The new server has SNMP installed whereas the old servers do not.

Also, the old servers are running service pack 3 and the new one is running service pack 6. Those are the only two differences.

Here is how I test it. I go to one old server, it's a test machine and run NT Explorer. On network neighborhood I can browse the other two servers and see their shared directories. When I click on the new server it ask me for a username and password. Why the difference? And the reason this will not work is because I'm trying to do a tape restore from one server to another and the connection is denied.

So what am I missing? Why is there a difference? And how do I get the old servers to see the new one just like they see each other?

if it's asking for user and password, either the machine is not on the same subnet...........

Or you created an admin password different than the others.

Ensure your Wins is setup properly and check your dns to ensure it is pointing to your primary server.

check your user properties on the new server you may have put a space behind either the workgroup/domain name or the computer name itself verify by this by placing cursor at the end of the computer name for example and adding a 1 then backspace to remove the 1 and apply the change and save reboot and try your share again do the same for wg/domain.
