NT Service Database

By firesheep43 ·
I am fighting with a nasty high end NT 4.0 WS used for video editing. Problem is with RAS and IP Protocol. When I try to remove it, change it, etc, I get an error that the Service Database is locked. Humph. That's it. Not sure on the history of the machine since the user has no idea what happened. What is the trick to get around this?

NT Service Database

by aclopez5 In reply to NT Service Database

The service database is locked when services are starting. If a service is hanging, this could take a while (5 minutes or more). Check the list of services and see if there are any services that are set to "automatic" but have not yet started. (You'll notice that you get the same message if you try to manipulate any service). Normally, when a service fails during startup, you'll get a message that says "one or more services failed to start...". You need to wait for this message to appear. Once you get the that message, the service database will be unlocked. Then you can check the Event Logs to which service was causing the problem.
