NT to 2003 upgrade

By mike.peck ·
I am in the process of replacing my old NT file server with a new 2003 server. For the time being the domain servers will remain NT. Here is my plan. I have set up the 2003 server (print drivers, shares, etc) and copied over all of the data files. My plan is as follows:
1.Unplug the old server (abc_fs1)from the network.
2.Rename the new 2003 server to abc_fs1 (old server name).
3.Assign the new 2003 server the old servers IP Address.
My questions is, are there any potential issues (problems) that I should be aware of.
Thanks,
Mike Peck

Should be ok, just remember to remove the old computer account from the domain before adding the new server.

BTW, migrating from NT4 domains to 2003 domains is not too hard. MS has supplied plenty of tools and wizards to make it easy.
Support for NT4 ended DEC 2004, so I would start planning for migrating to a 2003 domain....

You could have a few problems as the native mode for 2003 is different to the NT4 setup you'll have to run the 2003 Server in Mixed Mode. See the Following URL for a better description.

This is the Home Page for migrating across from NT4 to 2003 and has quite a few links to different topics.
