NT Users and Groups copy

By El Sombre ·
How do you copy and keep current NT users and groups on a backup server?

Data backup is easy but I need to be able to rollover to the backup server quickly without having to re-enter all users, groups and appropriate rights.

An automatic method to keep these current would be nice too.

Install a new NT Server as a BDC. Once done, let it synchronize with the PDC. You can force the synchronization to happen in Server Manager on the PDC. Highlight the PDC, then click Computer -> Synchronize Entire Domain. Let that run.
When done (and you can see when it is done in the Event Viewer, when it says that Synchronization is Complete with ### Changes Replicated), you have a backup copy of all users/groups/computer members. This is the whole point of a BDC in NT4. You could then have your PDC **** up, and all you would do is promote the BDC into the PDC role.
Easy.
Now, if you keep the BDC offline, you would then have to plug it in and turn it on. Then promote it to PDC.
Or, if it is a minor problem with the PDC, the BDC does not even need to be promoted. It can do user authentication by itself.
