NT Workstation on Win2K Domain

By mfrancis ·
I'm getting this error "The domain controller cannot be found" while trying to add a WinNT Workstation to the Domain which is a Win2K Srv DC from another WAN. But this works fine when adding from within the same LAN.

Is DNS configured correctly on the winNT system? Active directory requires a proper DNS config.

Point the workstation to the remote DC using the lmhosts file.

c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\lmhosts.sam - if intact, contains samples of what to do. Make your changes and save as lmhosts in the same directory.

Beware - the # modifiers are case sensitive, and it doesn't like being save as unicode either.

This looks like a wins problem to me. An NT Workstation uses wins to find a login server not DNS. You may need another wins server or at least a wins relay agent to cross the routers (which don't route netbios) to the wins server that has information on the Domain Controler. Also you can not run winnt 4.0 ona Win 2000 Acitve Directory that is in Native mode. And you need to have the PDC emulattor servuce running on the DC.
