nt workstation sharing

By hmccarty ·
One of the nt workstations on the network has never allowed any sharing of devices/files/folders. I removed all users, logged in as administrator, it gave an error message that denies permission. Would this be caused by an error in the NT installation (reinstall), or could this be a setting or service which can be turned back on?

It sounds like whatever you're trying to share has access denied to the administrator. You could take ownership of that directory if you want and then everything will work okay. There's not a setting that will cause this otherwise, but make sure the Server Service is running.

If you have a problem with the Admin account there may be a huge problem. You will not be able to make any changes.

However, in order for a machine to access info on a remote NT workstation in a peer-peer network there has to be a user account setup on that machine in user manager for each user who needs access to the shares.

If you are on a domain and having the same problems then there may very well have been an install problem. Back up the data to the network and reinstall that machine.

Good Luck

Verify that as local administrator that you have full control over the resource you intend to share. If you don't, give yourself permission by taking ownership of the file, directory, etc. It could be that the previous user of the box allowed onlyhimself to have FC over the box and all other accounts NO ACCESS or READ. If you take ownership you should have FC over the resource. If that doesn't resolve the problem, your in for a world of hurt.

Also, check
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanManServer\Parameters

If you see a key AutoShareServer and its turned off that could be the reason you admin shares don't work. GL
