NT4 DNS Name problem

By david.wilkinson ·
Hi,

I have 2 NT4 DNS servers.
1 on the PDC and the other on the BDC.
Both do not show a name on an nslookup.

DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
*** Can't find server name for address 192.168.1.63: Timed out

*** Can't find server name for address 192.168.1.13: Timed out

I have an external DNS server listed on my DHCP lissting and my XP & W2k Pc's will default to the named Unix DNS server.

I have NS records in my primary Zone's - i have tried removing all but 1 to see if it was a "too many NS" records problem.

Please help !

Dave

Your problem is that you don't have configured Reverse lookup zone.

In your DNS server(s) create reverse lookup zone.
The file should be named 1.168.192.in-addr.arpa
Place a pointer record in that file (PTR).

I'm currently teaching a class, so here is my example file:

;
; Database file 2.168.192.in-addr.arpa.dns for 2.168.192.in-addr.arpa zone.
; Zone version: 101
;

@ IN SOA london.nwtraders.msft. admin.nwtraders.msft. (
101 ; serial number
900 ; refresh
600 ; retry
86400 ; expire
3600 ) ; minimum TTL

;
; Zone NS records
;

@ NS london.nwtraders.msft.

;
; Zone records
;

1 1200 PTR vancouver.nwtraders.msft.
11 1200 PTR casablanca.nwtraders.msft.
12 1200 PTR tunis.nwtraders.msft.
2 1200 PTR denver.nwtraders.msft.
200 1200 PTR london.nwtraders.msft.
3 1200 PTR perth.nwtraders.msft.
4 1200 PTR brisbane.nwtraders.msft.
5 1200 PTR lisbon.nwtraders.msft.
6 1200 PTR bonn.nwtraders.msft.
7 1200 PTR lima.nwtraders.msft.
8 1200 PTR santiago.nwtraders.msft.

Just one piece of advice.
You should consider transfering your DNS to Windows 2000 Servers.
You will HAVE TO do that if you intend to use Windows 2000 domains (ie Active Directory service).

Fixed :)

I installed DNS on 1 of my Win2K servers, did the recursive lookup and all works fine.

Thanks for all your help.
