NT4 PDC Rebuild

By dross007 ·
I'm rebuilding my NT4 PDC. I want to make sure that users are able to access there files on the same share point with the same permissions they had prior to the rebuild. What steps, other then backing up there data, should be taken? I do have two BDC's, one of which I will promote a few days prior to the rebuild date. Any input is appreciated.

As long as you are going to promote a BDC to PDC, there should be no problems in user accounts. However, in order to copy the files from the original PDC to the new PDC you will need to use the utility called "ROBOCOPY.EXE" located on the WINNT resource kit. It will copy all files from old to new server while retaining all permissions on files and directories. If you have no actual data to copy, then all should work fine.
Good luck!

If you want to make sure all the same shares are set up on your PDC as before,

Using regedit, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer and export the Shares key to a .reg file. After the rebuild, double-clickthis file on the new machine and they will be restored. Might require reboot though!

Easiest way to ensure permissions are saved is to backup/restore the tree. Alternatively, you can use SCOPY (in the NT resource kit) or ROBOCOPY to copy the files/directories to another machine saving the security information and then do the same back. ROBOCOPY is probably the better of the two.
