NT4 Roaming profile reverts

By aschaffer ·
I'm having a very odd problem (aren't they all). This all takes place in an NT4 domain. Everyone has roaming profiles, I was looking through the profile sizes and noticed that 1 user had a very large profile (over 100MB), I found that this was caused by 1 ppt file in the personal directory. I moved the file to another location on the PC, and deleted it out of the personal directory on the user's pc as well as the server. Now every night the profile reverts to how it was before I deleted thefile, not only is the 100MB file back, but any other files that have been created are gone. Any ideas?

Most likely there is more than one computer being logged onto with that user profile. This other computer still has the old profile settings cached and is overwriting the changes you made. It logs off after the PC with the good settings erasing anychanges! I would delete the local copy on all PC's this user logs on to. The next time thay log on it will download the good profile. Profiles are very tricky when using more than one pc to log onto. Even though that is the reason for them.

Hope this helps,
Dave

I meant to say delete the local copy of the profile on all pc's this user logs onto.

The user only logs into 1 PC, just to be sure I checked all the other ones and she wasn't logged into any of them. In any event this has happened over a number of days and every computer is shut off every night.

I'm with answer 1 in that they're getting a profile being pushed from somewhere...although it's hard to say from where...maybe a default user profile?

Before you go nuts trying to solve this, I would just move everything in their home folder on the server to a directory somewhere to start with a blank folder and just copy the contents of c:\winnt\profiles\<user> up to that folder. That way you can at least be certain that both of those are the same (and you don't have to wait for NT to pushit back up)

I would also certainly make sure that they have at a minimum change access to their home folder and possibly reapply the permission to make sure they have it.

Good luck to you.

Mark

I have to agree with the first 2 posts. Give them the credit, I just have an observation.

I had a problem where my roaming profile would become so large that it would exceed its quota and I had to clean up files before I could logoff. I found the culprits, 2 ~500K index files in my history folders. So I deleted them. I use quite a number of machines and had the same problem on each. The files I had deleted would come back. I finally had to go to every machine I had used, log in, and delete the files locally - even though they were in my roaming profile! It took about a week to complete. Every time I logged in to any machine I had to check and delete the files if they were present or they would "poisen" my profile and they would re-appear anywhere I logged in.
