NT4 (SP6A) Server with 2kPro Clients.

By Peter Johnstone ·
We have a network with NT4 (SP6A) Server (PDC & BDC) and 85 Win98 Clients on a single Domain.
My Documents on the Clients point to a directory, Users, on the PDC. This directory is subdivided into Pupils, Staff and Teaching Files. These directories then contain the individual folders for the 385 pupils 50 staff and 10 faculties. Permissions are set as follows. Pupils - Change for their own, Read for Teaching Files. Staff ? Change for their own and Teaching Files, Read for Pupils. This all works very well and combined with local restrictions on the clients with few problems. Apps are mainly Office 97, Publisher 98 (and Office 2k)
Next year we will be going over to 2003 Server and XP Pro Clients. In the interim we have just received 20 Win 2k clients. I have started playing with one, no problems with joining the Domain and picking up the Users lists etc. However I can not get the default user?s My Documents on the Client to point to Users on the NT Server, so that the Apps save path is \\Servername\Users. Can anyone suggest a way of doing this, your help would be very much appreciated.

NT4 (SP6A) Server with 2kPro Clients.

You cannot point all users My Documents to the same directory until you have Active Directory installed on your network, and the workstations become members. Under Active Directory, Group Policy, User Configuration, Windows Settings, you can redirect local folders to a network share.

Until then, you are stuck logging in under each user and changing the target for each individual My Documents. Pain in the but, but I don't think there is an alternative

Thanks for your time you confirmed what I thought! I had hoped that someone out there would have a bright idea so I?ve waited a week before answering.
