NT4 to W2K Migration

By GJ2008 ·
I am planning on migrating our NT4 environment to W2K\Active Directory. Can anyone suggest the best way for me to do this - I would like the setup to be as follows: One domain under which there are 3 different sections representing 3 departments (which are currently separated domains) - I'm not sure if these need to be sites or child domains within the Active Directory environment? The departments will contain there own servers - does this mean that all 3 departments will have main domain controllers? Please put me in the right direction - ideas, good web links, etc. Thank you.

All you will need is one (Domain) the departments can be broken out into OU (organizational units) in AD. Now depending on how many users you have you will have at leasts one GC (Global Catalog Server...pre 2000 would mean PDC) and one DC (Domain Controller...pre 2000 BDC) so that it can authencate your user logon requests. Also when you go to run the upgrade on your PDC to 2000 check with your hardware vendor to make sure that all your drivers including SCSI are the correct ones for 2000 and will allow for a smooth upgrade. After checking for the hardware drivers the upgrade process goes rather smoothly. Naturally depending on your enviroment depends on wether or not what compenants gets installed into the computer.
