NT4 to win2k upgrade

By jmajcher ·
I have a 6 domain master model that I'm planning to upgrade to win2K. I want the namespace to be company.com
I figure that I have to build a new server to be the root of the tree to accomplish this. Otherwise the domain name of any of the existing domains would get pulled into the namespace with an in place upgrade. Am I thinking correctly on this?

Thanks
jeff

NT4 to win2k upgrade

Jeff,
When you install Active Directory on the first NT box you upgrade to 2000, it will ask you all the domain information including the name. In fact the naming standard for 2000 and NT are different so it will require a new name anyway. You you can upgrade a server instead of building it new; I don't suggest this of course because I've noticed in experience that NT server to 2000 server upgrades yield loads of problems, but the choice is yours.

Hope this helps

Ok I think I may have got ya, The domain name on the NT box is completly separate from the namespace on the 2000 server. We are running a hybrid NT & 2000 network and the 2000 namespace is invisible to the NT machines (and Vise-versa) Since activedirectory is a separate component of 2000 (installed after the installation) no information from the previous domain is carried over during an upgrade.

e-mail me if you have any questions
