NT4 <-> Win2K trusts

By j-w ·
our nt4 pdc/bdc's don't meet the minimum
req's for w2k. my thought is to upgrd the
DC for each site, create a new w2k domain,
and as we migrate desktops/users to w2kpro
add them to the new w2k domain w/trusts back
to the old domain providing access to those
resources .. will these trust work ?

NT4 <-> Win2K trusts

Yes. Win2K domains (native or mixed) can trust a NT4 domain. If you are happy with user accounts you can use the ADMT (active directory migration tool). This will copy users to AD from the NT4 domain, along with their SID, allowing users to stillaccess resources in the old NT4 domain.

Win2K requires massive resources and is a HUGE upgrade. You already are making the mistake of comparing Win2K and trying to use it as an old NT4 Domain model. Won't work. Get some training. Don't fool around!

btw, I know that NT4 domains are supported in MIxed mode, but am not sure about domain trusts between win2k and NT4.

training is the 1st step, been to updating skills which highlighted your

The trusts between NT 4 and 2k domains are fully support as external trusts. Mixed versus native mode has no affect on the trusts, it only affects NT 4 BDC's in a 2k domain. The ADMT is a good tool. Do test your migration and plan a back out plan incase something goes wrong.

again, .. wasn't positive on the trust thing your answers help .. I feel once the new win2k domain(DCs)is established
I see our migration driven by upgrades to the desktop so our back out plan is
back to the nt4 domain .. with resources
(member servers) being up graded when
the majority of a dept's users have
been ..

thanks for your replys .. closing this one down, but I'm sure I'll have more..
wait .. i have one .. DNS ??
