NT4 won;t recognise ADAPTEC SCSI Drives

By MtnSqs ·
I have an NT4 server which I want to rebuild from the ground up without changing hardware. THe machine has only got SCSI hard drives (no IDE) on it. I have what I believe is the SCIS driver diskette so I tell NT install to load the driver and it does, but then says it can't see any hard drives and exits the setup. The SCSI adapters are Adaptec AIC-7895 according to the SCIS Bios boot message. The disk I have says Adaptec 7800 Family drivers and has a file on it called aic78x5.sys which appearsto be the right file. I looked on Adaptec's page - they say anything that bios identifies as aic0-78x5 is OEM drivers for motherboard and they do not support them directly. I have no idea what the motherboard is - the machine is a few years old. Does nay one have any ideas???

Does this server multiple drives?? If so it is probably set up with RAID 1 or 5. If this is the case you need to install the RAID control drivers for the specific PC model. If the drives are in a RAID configuration, NT will never recognize the drives. Once you download the RAID drivers off the web site you just type S in the NT setup to specify SCSI adapters and it should load the RAID drivers and you'll be all set. Hope that helps!

If you allow NT to autodetect hardware it will often refuse to load the proper drivers afterwards. If you manually (S)pecify all of the appropriate drivers, you should load just fine with the disk you have.

I have been in a similar situation: We were installing NT onto a machine with an Adaptec Ultra Wide 2 card and NT would not detect it. You need to press the F6 key when NT comes up the first time with the blue screen and detects the settings. This will allow you to put in the drivers that came with the card. That is when you tell the installation that you want it to use the Adaptec drivers for NT that came with the card.

Actually the 789x card drivers are not available on the adaptec site. If your motherboard is from Intel you will get the drivers for the SCSI Card from the Intel Site. You will even get other drivers like the vga & network card from them. All these will be available form intel only if the motherboard is all in one including the scsi adapter. Regarding the driver you have the 7800 card driver will not recognize your present card, i.e. 7895, at all. Even when the driver is availble with you and you install the NT by booting directly thru the NT Cdrom the drivers will report that there are no mass storage devices found. The setup in this case has tobe started with booting the NT Setup Boot Floppies and in this select the SCSI drivers at the appropriate moment. Then only the driver recognizes the storage devices. But you will have to first search the proper driver. Normally by seeing at motherboard you can guess who the manuafcturer is. Best Of Luck!!!

If you are booting directly to the NT CD and installing from it you can experience this problem. Create the 3 boot disks and boot off of them and then provide the driver you have when requested for additional devices.
