NT4 Workstation clean install help

By simon.graham ·
Hi,

I'm trying to install NT4 workstation from scratch. I've run FDISK and created a 2Gb Primary partition; and a 2Gb Ext.partition.
These have both been formatted - via FORMAT.

Now here's the problem......I want to install NT4 from CDROM. How can this be done?

Oh, I am using a 98 Boot Disk as well.

Thanks,
Simon

Using the 98 boot disk, it should ask if you want to load CD-ROM support. Say yes, boot up, pop in your NT CD-ROM and go.

(Note: you may find your CD-ROM drive is assigned to E instead of D. If so, no problem).

That's assuming your 98 boot disk was made properly (Control Panel, Add\Remove Programs, Startup Disk tab).

If you need to, you can download a boot disk w\cd-rom support at www.bootdisk.com .

Hi Simon,

There are several ways to do this:

1. Depending on your BIOS, you may be able to boot to the cd-rom which should allow you to start the install process and create the NT boot Disks.

2. You will need to use a floppy boot disk thathas the cd-rom divers on it. Once you can access the cd-rom you should be able to install.

3. You can create the NT boot floppies on another computer and boot to them which should install cd-rom support during the setup process.

4. You can do a remote install using another computer. The two computers need to be on the same network and and you will need a Network Installation Disk.

5. You can install Win98 on the same machine and then install NT from within win98.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

I'm getting as far as seeing the CD ROM drive, which is assigned to F:

I can browse the contents of the NT4 CD via the F:DIR command.........but after that I am lost. How can I get to the I386 subfolder to lauch the setup.exe on the CD?
By the way, thanks for your help thus far.

Hi,
The easy way is to delete all partitions, modify boot sequence in BIOS with CD-ROM in first position, insert WinNT CD (if is an original CD) and let computer to boot from CD. Follow the wizard on screen.
If the partitions created with Win98 diskette is FAT32 you can't install WinNT (you must create FAT16 partitions).
If your WinNT CD is not an original one (bootable) you must create 3 diskettes ( create with <winnt32.exe /ox> command) on other system and use these to boot your system (change boot sequence in BIOS) and perform install.
