NT4.0 prob - boots only from the Floppy

By emanuel.perera ·
NT 4.0 boot up issue:

Environment: 30GB Hard Drive
Partition 1: FAT(had Win 98 earlier) approx 3 GB
Partition 2: NTFS 5 GB
Partition 3: NTFS approx 20 GB
NOS : NT 4.0 (SP6.a), Function of Server: BDC

After I initially installed NT 4.0 -BDC it booted up fine. Then I applied SP6.a and rebooted, it would NOT boot up. (I have checked CMOS settings)

Next I used the NT boot up disk (I had done before applying SP6.a) with Ntdetect, boot.ini and NTldr from the same server, It booted up fine. It boots up every time.

Now, if I try without the boot disk, it does not boot and gives an error msg. Something like “Kernel not found…....”

I checked the FAT partition, reNamed the files Ntdetect, boot.iniand NTldr on the server and copied the files from the floppy disk to the FAT partition. It still would not boot without the floppy.

PS: once booted up the server works fine.

I am missing something. I will thankful for Any ideas, pointers.
Emanuel

Is it possible that boot.ini in the root of your boot partition (C:) points to a different partition than the boot.ini on your floppy disk?

Thanks for the pointer. I checked the Boot.ini file. It appears as if it is good pointing to the proper partion.

Check proper locations for boot files

by davidpmartin In reply to NT4.0 prob - boots only f ...

Make sure that all the boot files needed are in the loaded in proper place (refer to the NT docs - don't know it off the top of my head). Also make sure that your C drive is marked as the active partition - you can check this with disk administrator

Hope this helps

Check proper locations for boot files

Thanks for the idea Dave. When I booted it one time I got a warning NTOSKRNL cannot be found. I looked for it in System32 folder and it was there but I replaced it with a new one but the result was the same.

I will post anything else I find.E.

This site has some info regarding your problem, http://www.jsiinc.com/SUBF/TIP2700/rh2745.htm I think you may have to run the repair process from the 3 installation diskettes to restore the ntoskrnl file properly. Good luck, Aidan
