NTDVDM process hangs

By tracyp ·
This is a question I asked before but still don't have an answer. Here goes again, I have an application that is supposed to run all the time. Every morning I have to go into task manager and end the process which is under NTVDM
along with wowexec. This application was written in Visual Basic 4.0 16bit.

Then I start the application up again and it runs fine all day long. I'm trying to find out when it stops or what's causing it. I'm trying to use Performance monitor but am not getting anyuseful info.

I get no error messages and event viewer doesn't show anything wrong. I've gone into the Microsoft knowledge base and tried several things suggested there but no luck.

This is an NT 4.0 workstation sp6a
On a Novell 5.1 networkusing client 4.8
Attached is a digiboard with 4 modems

Any suggestions about how to find when and what is hanging this program?

Extract (and expand) the Autoexec.nt, Command.com and Config.nt files from the NT CD, as they may be missing, if not, locate the pagefile.sys to a permanent drive, if it isn't; and make sure your PATH statement does not exceed 128 characters withoutthe use of additional PATH statements.

autoexec.nt, command.com and config.nt are all there. pagefile.sys is on the root of c. We do not reboot this PC. The path statement is only 86 characters. Any other ideas?

NTDVDM process hangs

Hi,

Have you considered spending the night at work?

Alternatively, I suggest getting hold of an automatic testing application - Mercury's WinRunner software is an expensive example... which look to your software like a user using it, and periodically run it all night. At some point it will probably fail.

Do the same several nights in a row and see if you can spot a pattern. There may be something else happening on your network that causes the failure.

Did this application run successfully 24x7 when it was running in a Win9x environment?

Cheers,
Tim.

Mercury WinRunner is expensive. This application has never been run in the Win9x environment. We are going to set up a PC with Win 98 and try to run it and see what happens.

We tried this application on a Win 98 PC. We still have the same problem ie. locking up at night. Here is more info on this application. We have about 10 users who have a loan program on their local PC. When they need to get a credit report, therequest goes through this misbehaving 16-bit visual basic program located on another PC. This program contains port info, init strings, phone settings and other usual modem type settings. This program receives the request, dials the credit bureau and retrieves the credit report. This program just sits there waiting for a request it doesn't do anything else. The program works fine from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm (or thereabouts). Users are requesting reports throughout the day but there is a lot of idle time. Sometime during the night the program locks and we have to manually end the process and start it up again for the day. It seems like it is a timeout issue but I don't know where to look. It is not an option to put this program on the users PC.
