NTFS Hard Disk Unaccessable

By Spag ·
History: I have 2 hard disks 1x40GB (disk0) and 1x160GB (Disk1) with Windows XP installed on 1st partition on drive0. in order to access the full data on drive1 I have used the intel IAA utility. This was used after disk was partitioned and therefore I used a dynamic XP partiton to see the whole disk1 as a single disk combining the 134GB partition and the remaining 26GB partition.

Question: I was installing Win98Se on disk0 and seem to have disabled the disk1 and am now unable to read this disk with ALL my data on.

Help on this would be VERY appreciated.

Regards, Paul

When I want to install two OSes, I usually install older Windows version first, the reason is Win2k, ME and XP will automatically see that you already have an existing OS and it will install itself on the other parttition. Make sure that both are FAT or both NTFS for easier access.

In the past if i've lost a drive I use the pqboot.exe file from partition magic v 7, copy the file from the partition magic CD onto a floppy disk. Then boot up to DOS with a win 98 emergency boot disk, then just run pqboot from the A: drive it willask you which partition you want to boot with and you just type ion the number of the partition. then remove the pqboot disk when the system re-starts.

If you dont have partition magic let me know and i'll e-mail you pqboot.exe.

All the best

i believe the problem is two fold, one you clobbered the xp boot info with the win98 install (dual boot is picky about the order in which the os's are installed because of this see support.microsoft.com search using dual boot winXP. the second problem is win98 can't read ntfs partitions. so when you get this all straightened out you might want to convert the ntfs to fat32 so both win98 and winXP can see it...see if you can borrow or buy partition commander or partition magic. it is a third party boot loader. it can bail you out, get you booting into XP so you can see ntfs. and it can also convert your ntfs partition to fat32...hope this helps...

If you want to recover your partition you'll need software to do it. Try this site
