I recently had fairly severe adware problems, and after running HouseCall i downloaded several windows service pack updates as HouseCall recommended. When i restarted my computer i found the error message ‘NTLDR missing or corrupt’. I followed the advice on this link http://www.tinyempire.com/notes/ntldrismissing.htm & i created a bootable usb stick & used that to get into windows.
However when following the advice about replacing the corrupt NTLDR file nothing seemed to work. I made sure the partition was recognised (which didnt work) & scheduled a disk check on reboot. However after the lengthy disk check it seemed to get stuck on the ‘windows is starting up’ section, and i left it for one hour (do i need to leave it more?). On reboot i was confronted with the black screen, after the POST loading bit, the black screen with the scrolling loading bars and the windows XP logo. (i have xp home).
Ultimately i’m not able to get into safe mode because the NTLDR is corrupt & i cant get into windows normally because of this black screen thing. I tried the fixboot & fixmbr commands with xp recovery but that didnt work either. I feel im running out of options before having to reinstall XP, which i would like to avoid as i have important files on there and no other computers (apart from this laptop im borrowing) to transfer the data to. I have a partitioned C drive & an additional dirve if that’s any help.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
