Try to boot to the recovery console using a windows XP disk. If you can do this, try running a chkdsk. If nothing comes up, try running it again like this. chkdsk /r. If this finds errors, try rebooting and starting up the computer again. If it's still not working, boot to the recovery console one more time and use the fixmbr and fixboot commands. If this does not work, you can run a full repair on Windows XP (which is just a reinstall over the previous version) but you will have to reinstall all applications and updates you may have made.

Try recovery console as suggested above. If no success, do a repair installation of XP.

Information above is inaccurate regarding repair installations. You will have to re-install any XP service packs or updates, but will NOT have to reinstall programs. Registry is also maintained.

Instructions for a repair installation of XP are at link below.

boot with XP installation cd in place and you may find you boot just great. it is because your hd has become very fragmented and ntldr is too fragmented to load at boot. it is possible you can't get it to boot anyway but if you do get into recovery console try defragging. if you have enuf hd space you can install 'rescue' installation of xp (just install in new folder) that can defrag hd for you...
