NTLDR Is missing or corrupt - Cannot fix

By ideafixer ·
I attempted to install a video card on my Windows 2000 PC. When I installed the card and booted the card was not functioning properly. I took the card out and booted the PC with a working card. That is when I got the NTLDR is missing error. It'sin dos text during the starup process.

I created a boot disk from a PC with the exact same operating system and model as this one. I copied NTLDR and ntdetect.com to the disk.

It boots up using those two files on the a drive but accesses myBoot.ini file located on c:\winnt. I copied the files from the a drive to the c drive per microsoft's instructions. I even tried copying the files from the c:\i386 folder to c.

I cannot get the PC to boot up without the floppy in the drive. Any suggestions?

NTLDR Is missing or corrupt - Cannot fix

I referenced this article and followed the instructions to fix it from a boot floppy. I copied NTLDR and ntdetect.com from the floppy onto the problomatic PC. The instructions also called for a copy of the boot.ini file. I could not obtain a copyof the file from the PC I was using to make the disk. I could use DOS to "type c:\boot.ini" but was unable to "copy c:\boot.ini a:\". I recieved a message stating the file could not be found. I am not sure if this has something to do with the instructions being geared tward NT and I am on 2000.

Anyway, I am still wondering if I am copying the files incorrectly from the A to C to fix my PC. Or what additional information I need to fix the problem.

The boot.ini file will be hidden and read only which is why you cannot copy it.

You need to open explorer and set it to show all files.

Then remove the permissions on the file to copy it to the floppy disk and remember to set the permissions back when you have finished.

Thanks for the comments. I think everything got a little off track. That may be partly my fault due to the wording. I was trying to copy NTLDR and ntdetect.com from my floppy onto the c drive. What I discover was Win 2000 will not let you overwrite these files dispite the fact it seems to copy. I needed to boot into the repair console and use DOS commands. I got there by booting into setup, choosing repair, and then going into the repair console. Once I copies the two files back to thec drive the computer worked fine. I suppose I could have copies the same files from i386 as well.
