ntoskrnl.exe file missing or corrupt

By david.clark ·
An error "Disk I/O error : Status 00001000" results requesting the file be restored, but the laptop cannot be booted, even in Safe mode, to enable the restore of the file. Can anyone assist in identifying how the laptop can bypass this error to a point where the corrupt file can be restored from a backup copy?

The Microsoft link does not relate to this issue which affects a file corruption with ntoskrnl.exe.
The Jsinc link does not contain a valid link.

Try this site

http://www.winnetmag.com/Article/ArticleID/14722/14722.html

easiest way to fix a problem with the boot.ini file is to run a little known switch of the fdisk command.

get to a dos prompt and run "fdisk /mbr" and it will re-write the boot.ini file for you.

try booting with installation cd. let it proceed as if you are going to reinstall. it will find your current win2k installation and offer to repair it. let it.

Unfortunately, the laptop is a Compaq N610 and Compaq no longer provide the repair option on their supplied installation CD.
