Firstly ‘ntuser.dat’ is a copy of user's profile i.e. user's desktop settings etc. In the industry it is also a standard practice to rename user's profile to ‘ntuser.old’ if the existing profile is corrupt. By so doing the next time the user logs in a new profile is generated for that user. Recently I noticed that if NT is upgraded to Windows 2000 you find that the profile extension is named differently. Check to make sure that the 'ntuser.old' file you find in the profile directory are not that of corrupted profiles renamed previously.
