Question

Number 3 doesn't work.

I can't type out the number '3' on my keyboard using the top row of keys, only the numpad, so I bought a new keyboard.

The thing is, it didn't solve the problem. New keyboard '3' doesn't work either, but numpad does. Any ideas what I could do to troubleshoot this?

I'm using Windows 10.

EDIT: It works if I start in safe mode.

Have you checked ?

by birdmantd Moderator In reply to Number 3 doesn't work.

If any other keys on the keyboard are also affected ? How does the keyboard connect to the computer, PS/1 interface, wireless, USB ? I wonder if the interface input on the computer might be the issue since you tried a different keyboard and had the same issue.

The other keys all work fine.
Both keyboards are USB.
I tried a different USB port but that didn't change things.

Not sure if my replies are showing, this is the second time I have tried.

All the other keys work.
Both keyboards connect via USB.
I tried changing the USB port they plug into and that didn't change things.

Something I try when that happens.

by rproffitt Moderator In reply to Number 3 doesn't work.

1. I boot another OS from USB and test. There are so many Live OSes and web pages about this test.
2. I go get SHARPKEYS (which is on the web as to where and how to use) to remove any key maps.

I installed SHARPKEYS and it can't find any key maps.
I'm unsure about the booting another OS from USB and testing idea. I will do some googling and look into it.

I don't know anything about booting from another OS from USB but will google and see what I can find.

I did however just try restarting in safe mode and the 3 key works then.

I installed SHARPKEYS and it couldn't find any key maps. (There shouldn't be any).

SAFE MODE WORKS.

That points to possible issues. One of them is really bad news.

1. MALWARE. As in key loggers. This sort of issue has once in a while led us to discover malware on the computer. I like bleepcomputer.com's approach to scanning and removal. Be patient as so many need help there.

2. Keymapping. I'm not there to see what you see items and ideas to try at https://superuser.com/questions/620466/how-can-i-undo-a-key-remapping where somethings are not detected by my fav.

3. Complete workaround. Map the key to be 3 again. Use your fav tool or one noted at https://superuser.com/questions/620466/how-can-i-undo-a-key-remapping

Open device manager.

Open the keyboard entry/driver.

Uninstall the device.......reboot.

If no help and it works in safe mode what's in your startup group?
