Number of NT4.0 computers in a workgroup

By k_chowdhary ·
I have 13 pc's running Windows NT4.0 all connected using a switch in the same workgroup (tcp/ip installed, ipaddress assigned to each machine; no domain). No machine is a server. All pc's are on and running simultaneously. On these twelve pc's, I want to map a drive (say y:) from the 13th pc( drive on 13th pc; it also has y: mapped to its own d: drive and the remaining 12 pc's want to connect to this). I can do that on 11 pc's but when I try to do it on the 12th pc, it does not allow me to connect to the 13th pc and gives the following error message.

"Microsoft Windows Network: No more connections can be made this remote computer at this time because there are already as many connections as the computer can accept".

If I switch off any one pc, I can get connection on the last pc which could not connect to the 13th pc. And then when I bring up the pc that I switch off, this pc now cannot connect to the 13th pc. Is there a limit on the number of connections in a workgroup?

Thanks.

Kamlesh

NT Workstation and all Win9x machines have a limit of 10 simultaneous external connections. This is probably what you are running up against. If you really need all of the connections live at the same time it looks like it is buy-a-server time. You will also need a Client Access License (CAL) for each of the other computers.

Sorry about that.

Stillatit is correct. If you don't want to buy a server, want to offer more connections, and are just going to need the computer as a shared file server, you may want to consider using Linux and running Samba on it.
