Object Placeholders in Active Directory

Can anyone give me insight into this concept in AD? I cannot add users to a universal group from an external trusted domain. However I can add it to a domain local group. The caveat is that it is really not a user account but it is what they call a “object placeholder” This is the first I’ve ever seen of this and would like more information on it.
