OE Account Order

By nevernessit ·
I would like to know how to change the order that Outlook Express 6 checks the six mail accounts I need to check. MSKB says that they are checked in alphabetic order of the friendly name, but I renamed my accounts with a letter in front as follows:
a. mail.bigpond
b. mail.bigpond 2
c. pop.yahoo
d. jfs_moose
e. mail.myplace

but they get checked in the following order:
d, e, c, a, b

I also tried to put numbers in front of the name to get them in the order I want but that didnt work either. How can I get them in the order I want (as the first mail boxes have lots of mail and I want to start checking them as soon as I can) Please help.

Well, my 3 accounts follow the alphabetical format.

Did you close OE and reboot between account name changes?

Many settings changes require a reboot to become effective.

Next, did you try alternate characters to the "." between the order character and the account name?

I would try {space} "_" or no character between them.

I even tried renaming them to just A B C D E but even that didnt work. Yes I did a reboot after I had made the changes. Now I just have the names, no special characters (such as a . or a _ etc) and they get downloaded in the following order:
kjamma
yahoo
jason
franks
jason2

This is getting frustrating! It is OE version 6.00.2800.1123 if that helps anyone.

Point value changed by question poster.

Well, I have the same version of OE, and changing the account names DID change the order in which the accounts retrieved messages.

I clicked on Tools,
Accounts,
Selected an account,
Clicked on properties,
Changed the mail account name,
Clicked on Apply, then OK.

The order of the accounts in the list changed immediately.

My XP Pro system has all security and critical updates installed.

I could not find any effect of it, but there is a "Set Order" button on the Accounts panel.

Other than confirming that this is supposed to work, I guess I don't have anything more to offer.

My "best guess" is that a registry or group policy setting is overriding your attempts to change the account order.

OK. Here is something new then. The Set Order button you spoke about, I had a look and on my Accounts page this button is greyed out and unavailable. I can right click it and get the Whats This? information box pop up, but I cant actually set that as on. Interesting.

Mine is grayed out on the mail tab, but not on the All or Directory Service tab.

I don't have any newsgroups, so I don't know if it would be available if there were any newsgroups listed.

As a side note, most of the "experts" who respond to questions here at TR use Outlook and have little knowledge of OE.

You might try the OE support sites listed here:

If I come up with any new ideas I will try and get back to you.

I just had another idea.

Are you running Windows 2000 or XP?

If so, try logging on as the Administrator.

(log off then choose administrator from the log-on screen)

What I am think is that if the mail accounts were created in the administrator profile, or are shared to multiple users, you can change the account names for your profile, but OE uses the default account names for the access order.

If so, the only way to change the order of accounts is to log on as the administrator.

I checked out the mvps.org site which was quite helpful. I still did not get the issue resolved as such. But I ended up creating a new OE profile and adding the accounts in order I wanted them checked. This has worked.

Im running Win98SE. I have now renamed them just with the single letter a, b, c, d, e but again they get checked as d, e, c, a, b.
I will try that support site and see how that goes.
Any more ideas?
I wont stop till I get this sorted. It should be a simple thing, and although its not a major issue in itself Im fired up now! :)
