Office 2000 Upgrade from network install

By david.kline ·
I am in charge of a project to upgrade 150 workstations from a network install of office 97 to a local
copy of Office 2000. The programs all upgrade fine but all personal settings are lost. Most users have
custom .XLA add-ins that were written by our programmers here. Most people also have custom Excel toolbars.
No matter what we have tried, we end up at the same place. After the upgrade, the add-ins and custom
toolbars are gone from Excel. We can go back and add these in manually, but it is too time consuming
for 150 workstations. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

If your users are resonably sophisticated, have them:

Start Microsoft Excel.

On the File menu, click Open .

In the Look in list, click the system drive (usually lettered C: ) and double-click the folder where Microsoft Windows is installed (usually the Windows folder).

Depending on which file is available, select one of the following files and click Open :

Excel8.xlb

-or-

username 8.xlb

where username is your logon name.
Click Open .

Microsoft Excel will merge the custom toolbars and toolbar customizations with the current toolbars.

This brings the toolbar in after the upgrade but does not help with the add-ins.

Trying to add custom settings over the network seems as though would consume a lot more time if this was possible with 150 workstations

I do not want to add anything. I want to migrate the customizations during the upgrade.

I have not done this but it sounds like you are open to suggestions...
Save the add-in's to a public folder
On one machine open a new worksheet
Start Recording a macro
Install an add-in
Save the Macro
Repeat for each add-in
Create buttons foreach add-in and assign each macro to a button
Name each button "install **** add-in"
Save the file to the public folder with the Add-in's
Save the file as read only
Email everyone a short cut to the file
Add text telling them to open the spreadsheet and click on the button for each add in they want.
Will it work?

We can add the add-ins after the upgrade, but we are trying to migrate the customizations during the upgrade.

I just wanted to add some more information. We know how to add the customizations back in after the upgrade. However, This is too time consuming for me and my staff. The users will not be involved in the upgrade in any way. I am looking for a way tobring the customizations (ie. add-ins,macros, and toolbars)into Excel 2000 during the upgrade.
