Office 2003 files slow over WAN

By dpratt ·
I have recently upgraded my users from Office97 to Office2003. My company has around a dozen remote offices ranging in size from
2-12 users each. All retrieve their files from a central server at another location.
The problem is since the upgrade, it is taking several minutes to open files and several minutes more to save those files. Does anyone have any suggestions on speeding up access?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Same problem

by msharp In reply to Office 2003 files slow ov ...

I'm having the same issue with Word2003 over the WAN. Application will lock up and become unresponsive for a a while when opening files across. Even small files (39kb) take over 40secs to open across a T1.

Found this article from MS, but it doesn't make a difference for us as we map drives with the logon script and they are not persistent.

Anyone else having the problem? Or know how to solve it?

Office 2003 files slow over WAN (Reason)

Here is a link explaining in detail why office is slow over WAN.

Baisically it has to do with the small packet size office uses to read/write files, which causes high network latency on a WAN.

Hope this helps.
