Hi all,
I have just assembled the following system:
Foxconn P35A-S motherboard
2 x 1GB OCZ OCZ2G8002GK PC2-6400 RAM
GIGABYTE GV-NX86T256H 8600 GT video adapter
320 GB WD3200AAKS SATA2 hard drive
I have not been able to successfully install a stable version of Windows XP. I have installed three times, most recently after doing a full reformat of the hard drive. The first two times, I kept getting blue screens or key services would end as soon as Windows came up. The SM Bus would not install and the Realtek Ethernet port would either not install or would show uninstalled after rebooting. I also had a lot of trouble getting the Windows security updates to install. After the re-format things looked better. I also reset the BIOS to ?failsafe defaults.? Now all the devices are installed and I was able to update Windows. However, now a few minutes after booting I get an error message saying that the ?Generic Host for Win32 services? had to close. I changed the BIOS options to ?Optimal defaults? and it booted without that error message, but Windows Office 2003 for some reason will not install. It ends immediately after accepting my license number. I even tried Office XP with the same result (I got as far as choosing a Complete install then it failed). Any idea why this would happen? Do I need to reinstall Windows again? Could this be a motherboard problem? Something in the BIOS? I am stumped.
Terry
PS: I have since updated the BIOS to the most recent version, but I still get the “Generic Host” error message. I notice that after this, there are still instances of svchost.exe running, so I presume the error message means only that one instance of the program was shut down.
The central part (I think) of the last failed install follows. There is a much larger file (149 KB, called ~_Task) of the detailed execution, but I can’t enough sense of it to know where to quote.
