Office 97 Binders won’t open word docs

After getting the “nimda” virus, binders would no longer open word documents contained within binder. After failed attempt if you opened excel file in same binder and went back to word doc it would open. Reinstalled Office 97 which solved problem. Then reinstalled excel calc update patch and service pacs 1&2, now problem is back. What’s up?
