Office 97 on Windows XP Pro?

By Mozster ·
We are migrating from Win 98 to XP Pro but want to continue using Office 97 in the interim as the Office 2003 rollout isn't due for a while yet.

Does anyone know if there are any issues with running Office'97 under XP?

I used Office97 under WindowsXP without problems.
It's true this was without service pack. So I realy don't know if work with service pack. But try it.

Would be service packing XP to level 2 and Office'97 to SP2b.

The solution while trying to manually register 'htmlmarq.ocx'

Open regedit and browse to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options

You should see htmlmarq.ocx and htmlmm.ocx separate keys. Rename them to something else, ie. htmlmarq.tmp and htmlmm.tmp.

You will now be able to install Office 97, including the HTML option, without incident.

DISCLAIMER: I don't know what this section of the registery does or why these files were apparently blocked (intentionally or accidently), but this solution worked flawlessly for me. If you feel uncomfortable, I'm betting you can rename the keys back to the originals and office will work, but if you need to reinstall, you'll possibly have to rename them again.

If your users are not in the local administrators group, Word 97 has a problem with spellchecker:

By the way, if someone uses Outlook Express 6, the Office 97 spellchecker will not be available in OE6 after migration to Windowx XP but you can restore the missing system file:

I still have some PC's on my business network, running XP, and Office 97. There appears to be no conflicts, only when someone emails a .doc in a newer ver. and the user calls me 'cause they can't get it to open.

Seems to be an issue with Access 97.
Once installed and trying to run it it gives an error"Microsoft Access can't start because there is no license for it on this machine"

Have tried to resolve it by making license permissions changed in the registry as per KB article 141373 but still occurring.
