Office 97 Read-only files

By jfletcher ·
On an NT 4.0 SP5 system, Excel 97 files have full control for a global group. On opening these files on another system, with the user in the global group, the files are opening as Read-only. The folder down to the file has full control permissions to that group. The worksheet also has no read-only properties. This is also happening in Word 97. The orginal file is an Excel 97 or Word 97 file. Both systems are identically set up.

Any suggestions??

Check the summary page under the file menu on the original computer. If the author box has anything in it, it is possible that the document is not available for editing. If that is not the cause, make sure that the other "system" has the been trusted. Hope this helps.

Check the user profiles to see if user is partr of a local group or that user has permissions for read only at domain level, the user could be part of a global group, but if user is profile is set in permissions then the most restrictive rules will apply.

Thanks to soulrider. This helped us put our thinking caps on. We save all our data in a datafile, sharing that folder, with folders in datafile folder for our spreadsheets, documents, etc. (Supposed to be easier to share!!!)We had the DataFile folder read only and individual folders in it, with group permissions set for each folder.
We changed the Datafile folder to full control for everyone and will now try to control permissions on individual folders under it.

Thanks again!!!!
