Office up-grade will not work on new Dell

By technoooo ·
I set-up a new Dell for an individual who started with office 97 and has bought up-grades up until now. When she puts in her Office XP disk into her new computer, it will not let her load it because the machine is looking for the original and all she has is the up-grade. Office 97, being 16 bit software will not install on her Win XP machine so that the machine can see that her office XP is actually an up-grade. Any ideas? Thanks

When it asks for the original

Does the XP installation ask for the original disks? If it does then put the Office 97 CD in so the program confirms the original exists. After that take it out, put the XP CD back in and continue with the installation (Note: At least this works on any OS upgrades that I used to do. So based on that experience I am assuming Office has a similar option)

If that doesn't work, they try to install Office 2000 full version from a friend and then upgrade it using her XP or is that even an option for her?
