Offsite Media Storage

By lfigg ·
I am looking into offsite storage of backup tapes and would like to benefits from the experience of others.

My primary question/concern is the lack of any liability for security of stored media taken by the companies that offer such services. All seem to have disclaimers of any responsibility/liability in case of media loss/destruction, even in cases of their employees' negligence.

Any thoughts? Am I being overly concerened?

You are right to be concerned

The off site backups are suppsoed to be the last bastion of hope in case things go wrong. There are usually multiple providers of this in most metropolitan areas. Just visit the sites of each before committing to them.

Also, you might consider a diskless backup solution. Usually for about the same price as tapes and offsite storage, you can have someone like Evault backup your systems over a point to point connection (T1 or whatever is appropriate) and there are no tapes. Restores can be done in minutes, too, without waiting for the tapes to come back.

Evault software can also be used in-house (cheaper than using their services, but you do the work) and if you have a secondary site, you have instant offsite storage.
