Hey OH Smeg, this was the last post for that question so I'm starting
over here...


Well provided that the RAM is installed in the correct Sockets
The Speed will be correct for your CPU.

However if it is in the wrong Sockets the CPU will only be running at
50% of the Front Side Bus Speed that it should be running at. To find
out which are the correct sockets you need to look at the manual
under Dual Chanel Ram.

As Dell may not have this you may need to look at the M'Boards
Makers Web Sits for this M'Board. You can get the Makers Name &
Model from the BIOS String which is a Alpha Numeric String of letters
& numbers that appear on the POST Screen you may have to go into
BIOS and turn off the Dell Splash Screen though and then after you
have written this down go here to find out the M'Board Details.

I clicked on the link and d/l the bios wizard. After loading the
program, I clicked run and started it. THEN my computer started
"ticking" real fast and proceeded to put up the "blue screen of death".
Should I try a different program or modify the settings or what? BTW, I
ran it twice and it did it both times.

OK now I'm lost there was no software to install so what was installed?

This is a Dell Branded M'Board with a FSB of 800 MHZ. That means that each RAM Bank of 2 Sockets runs at 400 MHZ and when correctly installed the 2 RAM Banks each run at 400 MHZ giving a FSB of 800 MHZ, 400 + 400 = 800

Most RAM Sockets on this type of M'Board are color coded and the User Manual has the correct way of fitting the RAM.

All this really means is that Dell has a Custom BIOS Chip fitted so you'll have to look at the M'Board to find the Real Makers Designation. However there is the possibility that this is only made for Dell so the Maker doesn't need to support this M'Board. It has a Intel 945 Chipset which is a fairly common one these days and works well.

So what does the Dell User Manual tell you?

I tihnk I need to loook and see if I installed the memory in the right slots. I can't remember now. "My computer" under "properties" shows that I am running the amount of RAM I have installed, but I see in the Dell manual that I need to have the new RAM in 1 and 3 and the old in 2 and 4. BRB tomorrow...

Yes that sounds right

You need to have identical Sticks in 1 & 3 and the same applies to 2 & 4.

So you can fit the 1 GIG Sticks to Ram Slots 1 & 3 and the 512 MEG Sticks to 2 & 4. Generally these sockets are different colors so Sockets 1 & 3 should be 1 color and sockets 2 & 4 should be another color. Doesn't matter wich way you fit the RAM provided that they are in Paired Arrays.

64-bit XP?

Hey Smeg, I guess from what I've been reading I SHOULDN'T be thanking you too much because your head is big enough already! ; ) Memory runs better now, thanks. I'll be replacing the 512 sticks with 2 more 1gig G Skills soon, I know it will only run 3.5 because of my 32bit XP but I think it will be just a expensive to buy 2 1's as it would to buy 1-1 and a 512. What do you think about upgrading to XP 64-bit? Does this give you quite a bit more performance, or will it start me down the "upgrade" road again?

It's not a real problem it only means that Windows can not access all of the RAM but because of the price of RAM these days it's cheaper to max out the OS in Dual Chanel mode so that you get the best performance.

If you start mixing RAM it kills off the Dual Chanel Mode and slows down the Computer so for a few $ worth of unused RAM you are getting the best performance possible out of the Hardware to me that's not a issue as if you use more RAM that the OS can possibly make use of.

When it comes to 64 Bit operating Systems they are defiantly the way that things will go but right now the drivers for your Hardware are not available in good enough configuration to be all that usable. With the High End Video Cards it's a common occurrence not to have all the features available with a 64 Bit Driver & Software that is available with the 32 Bit Drivers & Software. Sure you can not install all the RAM that a 64 Bit Windows OS can use as that is more than the M'Board can support but with the limited Drivers and Hardware support this makes 64 Bit Windows OS not at all favorable right a the moment. Then because some Software will not work with the 64 Bit OS it is far less usable that it should be. When we moved fro 8 to 16 Bit and then to 32 Bit OS's and Software it was a fairly seamless transition but unfortunately the move to 64 Bit Computing seems to have stalled.

It could be because M$ has now got so Bureaucratic that it is now incapable of quickly & easily changing direction and producing new product or they may just have lost interest either way the steps forward to 64 Bit and above seem to have stalled with no immediate Software Implementation being in sight.

Just my thought though I may be wrong.
