We are running MS Exchange Server 5.5 SP3 on Windows NT 4.0 SP6 with Outlook 2000 on Windows 95 and Windows 98 on the client side. We’ve had a couple of incidents where the client cannot attach to the server. Users get the “unavailable or…” message when trying to logon. We have checked the binding order, uninstalled and reinstalled Outlook on the client, rebooted the server, tried to draw a corelation between network connections and swithces, and a dozen other things. The odd part of the symptom is that 40 to 60 percent of the machines will not connect while the other 60 to 40 percent don’t even know there’s a problem. We struggle with trying to find the cause for about an hour to two hours then, without warning, someone will call up and say “Thanks for fixing the problem.” We check and they’re all working fine. They’re fixed and we don’t know why. None of the IT staff did any fixing, just searching.
Can anyone tell me what may be causing this temporary malfunction between Exchange and Outlook 2000? Can anyone tell me what to do to keep it from happening again? It’s really frustrating!
