Old hard drive is dead; how do I boot new one?

by jeffh20 . Updated 19 years, 4 months ago

I have an old gateway computer that my son uses for games. It originially had win98, and still has a pentium4 processor. I am not a computer guru, so any info that is needed you will have to ask for it.
The old drive has bad sectors on it. It will sorta boot, it tries to do a scandisk but then computer turns off. I bought a new hard drive for it. The old one is ide and the new one is sata. I have the adapters and have had it plugged in. I would like to remove the old drive and trash it. How can I get the new one working?

Thank, Jeff
