Old hard drive is dead; how do I boot new one?

By jeffh20 ·
I have an old gateway computer that my son uses for games. It originially had win98, and still has a pentium4 processor. I am not a computer guru, so any info that is needed you will have to ask for it.
The old drive has bad sectors on it. It will sorta boot, it tries to do a scandisk but then computer turns off. I bought a new hard drive for it. The old one is ide and the new one is sata. I have the adapters and have had it plugged in. I would like to remove the old drive and trash it. How can I get the new one working?

Thank, Jeff

SATA Drive

Will not likely work on an old Gateway PC unless:

A - There is a SATA controller on the Motherboard (not likely)

B - You buy a SATA controller PCI card

When working you will need to reinstall the Operating System and Applications.

I thought because he bought an adapter that it would work

That's a question on my part, not a statement.

I thought I read(so I do not know first hand), that you can get an adapter for a sata to run off an ide port?

Suggest you try the "Questions" forum.

The "Discussion" forum is for matters of general discussion, not specific problems in search of a solution.

Post problems such as this to the "Question" forum, rather than the "Discussion" forum. There are those who specifically seek out problems in need of a solution, and that's where they go to look for such.
