Old School Sound Still Around?

by matthewpoelzer . Updated 19 years, 1 month ago

Hey, got a question for anyone feelin’ kind enough to answer. I haven’t had a PC in a long time, but now I’ve got a PC now made to run Windows 98SE, and that’s exactly what I wanted. I only want to play older games, mainly based in DOS, and I really don’t like the fact that I can’t get DOSBox/D-Fend sound to sync right with speed/graphics settings (one or the other seem to suffer).
I can get most games to run perfectly with digital sound(ESS solo 1), but I can only get the music working for a few games. For example: Wolfenstein 3D works flawlessly but unless I use PC speaker for the music, there is none. The digital FX are there but no music. I’ve tried looking for AdLib, AdLib Gold, Gravis Ultrasound, and other old sound drivers but to no avail!!! I’ve heard something about DOS and Windows fighting over the sound but I don’t know exactly. Even If I have to install sound directly to DOS and bypass Windows- playing the games through DOS only – it doesn’t matter. The music is so much a part of the gaming experience to me that I’ll learn how to fix this problem if no one has alread. In that case I would need to know of the tools to write software/programs to be able to fix this sort of issue. AAAAHHHHH!!!!! Sorry! Just, please, if anyone knows anything about this I’d really appreciate feedback.
