oleaut32.dll

We have a win98 second edition machine that has Office2000 and was updated to Explorer5.5 this machine would have an invalid page fault upon exiting Internet Explorer with Oleaut32.dll listed, So we replaced this with another rebooted everything seemed fine no more Invalid page faults until about a week later when Word was opened then the display box said the oleaut32.dll was outdated and needed to be updated. So I found another machine and booted into DOS renamed copied in new file booted into windows Word works now Explorer works then rebooted machine word still works but explorer now has the original problem back My question is this file stored somewhere else and being copied over and do I need to extract it from a cab file to get an original for this particular machine and if so how do I keep it from being corrupted. If this in fact what is actually happenig to the file. Any help would be greatly appreciated

There are some bugs reported with IE 5.5. I am unsure if this is one of them - however, I do know that IE 5.1 is very stable. You may want to downgrade your IE installation to version 5.1, and then repair the OLEAUT32.DLL file from the Office 2K CD.

Ok if I wanted to try this does anybody know where the oleaut32.dll is located on the Office 2000 disk and does anybody have a good way of searching cab files to find these .dll's when they are buried in cab files

Go to www.rarsoft.com and download their WinRAR zip utility. This program compresses files better than WinZip and it also has the ability to read Cab files.

It amazes me that you have so much time to search year old postings but still can't provide an answer. About your quote, You forgot yourself "people who think they know everything"but do not. The answer to the puzzle is at http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q259/7/37.asp The file could not be restored or replaced from CD.the reason is it is not a protected file and when you install MSN investor or upgrade to a specific version. It over writes this file and one other file that isassociated with it this patches overwrites 5 files to ensure that they all are of the same rev.

You need to find out if Office 2K and IE 5.5 use the SAME VERSION of oleaut32.dll. Also, try installing Service Pack 2 for IE 5.5. Also, use System File Checker in Win98 SE to browse CAB files. It's also refreshing to see people who claim "any help would be greatly appreciated" show it with rejections without explanations.
