Question: What steps do you take to get the computer to show up on the network once you noticed that its not there?

This is just my opinion but I have had problems with realtek nics on alot of machines. I usually disable it and put a pci nic in the problem pc's to resolve. I have never been able to get an answer as to why realtek has so many problems.

You should try speed of your NIC set up on const. 10 or 100 mb/s because sometimes auto negotiation breaks down connection between Realtek-NIC and switch.
