One of 2 PCs won't logon to NT Domain?

By sloan.aw ·
I have an NT 4.0 Server based network with a laptop and a PC client both running Win98. The laptop is configured just like the PC, to pickup and address from DHCP. Also, running WINS and DNS on the server, so I can ping by hostname, alias, or IP address from any machine. The PC logs on OK and yet the laptop cannot logon to the domain! Reinstalled the MS Networking client, TCP/IP, etc.... Any ideas?

One of 2 PCs won't logon to NT Domain?

I have a lot of ideas, since a problem like this could be a lot of things. You could double check to make sure the laptop is a member of the domain. When you try to logon, what sort of error do you receive? Since you have not said everything you have done to troubleshoot this, I will point out seemingly obvious things like making sure the user name and password are correct, the subnet mask is configured correctly. You may even want to try switching ports on your hub or switch.

ping OK - not a physical problem.

Make sure you specify the domain name in the client for microsoft networks and on the identification tab where it says workgroup. Also make sure the logon is set to client for microsoft networks and not to windows logon. Beyond that you need to giveus more info such as the error you are recieving.

First - ref answer #1, win98 machines cannot be members of a domain so disregard.
Second - ref answer #1, if you are using DHCP and this is the only PC not working then there is nothing wrong with the subnet mask.

Ref answer #2, you do need to supply additional data. You state "so I can ping by hostname, alias, or IP address from any machine", does this include your laptop? Can you get a "net view" using the ip address of the pdc?

You can't net view unles you're logged on. I managed to do this by logging on to a fictional domain - "No domain server found...no drive mappings...." but still didn't resolve hte problem ....

Further to the above:
-Error message 1 - No domain server available or wrong logon id or passwd...
-Error message 2 - Not logged on (cannot browse)
-can ping to and from laptop by IP or name
-have tried basic/obvious things ie. logon ID, psswd, IP/SM settings - even static IP.

This sounds like a master browser issue.
On the win98 systems go to Network Neightborhood\Properties\file and print sharing\ disable browser master.
