one of the file containing registry data

I have installed windows xp with sp2 on a computer with a brand new 40 gig hard drive partitioned into two drives c and d. When I boot the computer the following error pops up on the screen.

ONE OF THE FILES CONTAINING THE SYSTEMS REGISTRY DATE HAD TO BE RECOVERED BY THE USE OF THE LOG OR ALTERNATE COPY.

Another member of Techrepublic had the same problem but some how it disappeared for her. I have ruled out the hard drive because I have plenty of spare hard drives as backup. I pulled a brand new backup hard drive 40GB and reinstalled windows xp and sp2. The same error message popped up again. Sometimes it will not pop up for several reboots and then others it will show up every time. The system is about 4 years old and was running 98 and I was updating it to xp. Does anybody have any ideas. Could this be caused by not haveing up to date motherboard drivers. Also when I installed xp on the second hard drive I made sure the computer did not have any internet connectivity. The only two items I used to install with was the xp cd and a cd with sp2 on it. I have installed xp on a lot of computers and this is the first time I have had this error.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

The problem could be originating in a couple of places.
First, I would check to make sure that your BIOS is keeping time. With a 4 year old motherboard it’s possible that the battery is weak and failing, causing a time sync issue with Windows XP.
The seconde problem area I see is the upgrade from Windows 98 to XP. In my experience the results are horribly inconsistent. I would try installing XP to a clean drive. This would eliminate the possibility of data corruption in your Windows 98 image. Also check to see if you have the same error before and after updating to SP 2.
The next is that your system is 4 years old. There may be an issue with the harddisk controller if installing to a clean drive results in the same experience.
