One thing I really appreciate about this place...

It's how there can be a thermonuclear explosion of rage in one thread, and then the same people can be perfectly civil in another one, right next to it.

I found out the rarity of this when I just now got kicked off a discussion group... apparently I was bad for calling a pompous *** on his ill-supported views, and even more bad for sticking up for myself when his compadres started in on me.

Seem I have a character flaw; when three different people start harping on me for being a fascist because I want proper arguments and not misunderstood aforisms - well, it turns out that under those circumstances I start writing arguments cast in plutonium. They didn't like that one bit. EDIT: Don't worry, it was in my native Danish... I know that language well.

But then, ok, it would've been pretty futile to stay there, seeing as how that would've been a sort of insurgency that I can't really justify. I just didn't realize just how badly out of sync the respective views of good conduct were.

So, I'm just venting a bit, now. Hope you don't mind.
But hey, this can be another Rants'R'Us thread, like that one Jaqui did a year ago

Evidence and well-formed valid arguments.

These are not for everyone, apparently.

Yep. At TR, generally, I find you can walk away to another thread with the same characters and you don't have to be concerned with anything bleeding over. Generally.

Discussion group

Kicked off here or some other site?

The trick in either case is to strike fatally and leave no opponent alive. In order to do that, the Force must be strong with you. Argument otherwise is trifling and a waste of your time.

I did get in some very nice ego hits...

by AnsuGisalas In reply to Discussion group

Can't tell if they were fatal - but anyway, those things don't kill right away... it's the eventual blood loss what gets them.

EDIT:No, not here. An informal debate mailing list for debating the state of the Danish tongue... apparently it was supposed to be just a place for lamenting arbitrary events so as to be able to wallow in ones own betterness... not my kind of scene, and not a play I'm really capable of pulling off, either. Funny thing is, I was invited there because they wanted to get some life into it, because they had a steady gang of people with pretty much the same opinions on things. Now they know they like it that way, too.

You'll usually hear them complaining how their tongue is dry... that's why Carlsberg had such a good basis for going International

Danish being the language of my forefathers

by NickNielsen In reply to I did get in some very ni ...

I made a serious attempt to learn it in the late 70s/early 80s. I was temporarily diverted by "ein øl" (Thy Pilsner, in this case <) ), but I persevered.

After a couple of years, I knew many of the words, but still had not succeeded in learning to gargle my tongue. :^0

It's not easy...

by AnsuGisalas In reply to Danish being the language ...

With Finnish I subscribe to the saying that "it's not difficult, just different".
With Danish, I think it's probably the other way around "not so different (from english), but difficult".
Especially the r-sound and the glottal "std" (a complete or partial closing of the larynx, that is, the vocal cords, mid-sound)... but also a funky way to produce word stress helps mix it up.

Og ja, jeg kan godt huske at Thy Pilsner er en rigtig god øl!

Yep that will teach you

To expect Logical Arguments from some here.

Remember never let the Facts get in the way of a rant by those who truly believe what it is that they are rabbiting on about so stupidly. :0

I've always enjoyed that.

There have been a number of times when I've been cyber-screaming at a member in one discussion while supporting him or her 100% in another less than 10 minutes later. Jaqui and I have come to blows several times, but disagreeing with someone doesn't mean you can't respect him.

I don't have much experience on forums outside this one, but I find the standard around here is for a reasoned, supported position. Attempting anything less risks mass mockery.
