Ack. This one is bugging me! On a friend’s laptop, Dell Inspiron 7000, Win 98 SE, Pentium 133 etc, he was having “problems getting online”. His dialup/modem stuff works fine though: it dials up, connects at 49 or 50,000 or so bps, Internet Explorer will open (with an error msg saying Content Advisor is set wrong, and I’m hoping that the answer to “Forgotten Pass Content Advisor” will help);
I type in any url and it starts to connect and d/l, but stops before the page can load and remains at the default “page cannot be displayed” or whatever it says. Also I noticed that I cannot ftp from DOS, nor telnet from this machine: tells me the sites I want to connect to are not valid. I am clearly connected to the internet, but the machine somewhere is stopping me from connecting to other sites. I tried uninstalling his IE 5.5 and installing IE5.0 but that made no change at all. I uninstalled 5.0 and reinstalled it twice, once with the repair option. No changes came from this. The modem on this machine is relatively new, but the user says he was using it just fine a few days ago.Any ideas?
