User opens a Word template that has embedded Excel spreasheet. When he tries to edit the spreadsheet, an Windows Installer starts up asking for MS Project 2000 CD. If user hits cancel several times, the installer goes away. Then the following error appears: "Microsoft Excel is waiting for another application to complete an OLE action". When user closes this error, he is finally able to edit the spreadsheet. User does not have or had MS Project 2000 installed.

Did you do a complete install (Run All from local disk) of Office 97 to the system having the issue?
The word template was created in Office 97 also? If so, then the most likely cause of this issue is an add-on is needed. A complete install should resolve this issue.
We have had the same experience using Word 2000. However, we have Project 2000, and inserting the Project CD enables the display of the Excel sheet. Word seems to require an element of Project. Why? We do not know. Seems that something is missing from Word.
Not much help I'm afraid (also, Project is not installed at the end of the process).
It actually worked. After inserting Project 2000 CD, installer seemed to have copied some files and let the user edit the spreadsheet. Further attempts to edit the spreadsheet did not ask for Project disk anymore. Thanks.
