I’ve updated a linux system for research from RHEL4 to RHEL5. The system is used for 3D chemical modeling. Under RHEL4 I was able to provide users remote login via vnc to their local accounts and full use of the software with no interference on the console. Under RHEL5 I’ve only been able to successfully connect via vnc and run the software remotely on accounts logged into the console. VNC connections to displays other than the console get OpenGl errors when the software attempts to run. I eventually switched gears and tried XDCMP and Xming but connections are not consistant. Some are just grey screens. Successful connections only run the software about half the time. The other half I get OpenGL errors as I do with non-console vnc connections. Online tips and discussions pretty much have me running in circles. Does anyone out there have a good remote/virtual desktop reference that explains the details of the different available options, types of software and performance supported, and most importantly how to set them up properly and securely? Though I’d be happy just getting a fish on this I’m trying to learn how to fish since I know I’m going to have to do more later.
